Making Certain that Students Will Thrive
in the Program and in Their Careers as
Professional and Technical Communicators

Our mission is to make certain students thrive while they are in the program and do even better once they leave. Toward that end, we keep up with industry demands and changes and make certain our instruction fits within those paradigms.

Students can help themselves by using the faculty for guidance and by keeping control over their programs of study. No two students need the same program, and so you should be aware that you have a great deal of control over yours, you can adapt it in powerful ways. For example, if you are more interested in art than editing, you have the ability to focus much (though not all) of your work on design topics. If you are interested in computer technologies, you can immerse yourselves in these technologies in the program and by taking a relevant minor. To do this effectively, you will need to take control of your progress. You should be sure to study the course requirements and plan your curriculum of study from the beginning.

Students in this major are also strongly encouraged to earn a minor in a subject area that will broaden their intellectual background and help them advance in their careers (e.g., Management Information Systems in the School of Business or a Multimedia Development minor in Instructional Technology.
