The professional and technical writing program prepares writers to be confident participants in all areas of professional communication.

You take classes in areas focused on effective writing and modern writing technologies.  For example, in addition to writing and editing classes, you study document design (learning to use PhotoShop and similar design applications), publication (using InDesign and FrameMaker), website creation (using DreamWeaver, XML, and XHTML), and you learn this in both creative writing and technical writing environments. Creative writers are given the tools to step into the 21st century as authors, and technical writers are given the tools to step into the workplace.  Of course, many students do both.

By the time you leave, you will be able to demonstrate a variety of skills and abilities:

• Excellent writing skills and habits
• Proficient document editing
• Working with production personnel for publishing documents
• Using current text and design production software and hardware
• Critiquing writing and design in documents
• Working with subject matter experts to plan and create publications
• Educating others about the writing process

Students in this major are also strongly encouraged to earn a minor in a subject area that will broaden their intellectual background and help them advance in their careers.
